Poly Styrene was and is unique. Her look and attitude stood apart. Her songs addressed subjects like conformity, the ever-encroaching commercial influences on day-to-day life and the powerlessness brought on by these issues. Her songs tackled the issues with an irresistible surrealism and humour often lacked by punk.
Them, they came out with a sound and attitude and a whole energy — it was just not relating to anything around it — superb.
Poly Styrene was among the first to teach me that girls in bands could shout, be critical about sexism and consumerism, dance funny and wear helmets and braces. She’ll always be up there with the punk greats.
Rest in peace.

CCF: What are some memorable moments so far from shows you’ve played?
FM: Oh man, so many! I played in front of a small faction of the Aryan Nation in Phoenix. Which was awesome. They spit beer in my face, but I spit it right back at them and got right in their faces and started singing. They loved it!
