This is the last part of a four part series exploring Black Women who are in punk bands. Last but not least to be featured are the following talented ladies.

Honeychild Coleman (top left): From Kentucky, Honeychild Coleman’s influence has extended across various well-known bands, including “The Slits, Greg Tate’s Burnt Sugar Arkestra , Mad Professor, Apollo Heights , Death Comet Crew (with Rammellzee), Gregor Asche AKA DJ Olive and Raz Mesinai’s Badawi” (1). Besides being a solo artist, she also plays guitar. Her music was featured in the groundbreaking film Pariah. Suggested Song: Echelon (Live) (WebsiteFacebookTwitter)

Kathy Foster (top right): Kathy Foster is best known as the bassist for punk band The Thermals, and plays drums for All Girl Summer Fun Band as well. She is original from California, but moved to Portland, Oregan around 1998. Suggested Song: A Pillar of Salt (Live) (Kathy Foster Wikipedia)

Shingai Shoniwa (bottom left): Shingai Shoniwa is associated with post-punk band the Noisettes, where she plays bass and provides leading vocals. According to Wikipedia, her first name means “be bold/courageous/strong” in the Shona language, which is a Bantu language native to the Shona people of Zimbabwe. Shingai met future Noisettes bandmate Dan Smith at the BRIT School for Performing Arts & Technology (located in Croydon), which she attended. The Noisettes have reached critical acclaim, having been praised by Rolling Stone, the New Yorker, and others. Suggested Song: Never Forget You (Live) (WikipediaInstagram)

Tracy Wormworth (bottom right): Tracy Wormworth comes from a family of musicians — her brother Jimmy Wormworth is a drummer for The Conan O’Brien show, and her father and sister are also musicians (a jazz drummer and vocalist, respectively). Tracy herself plays bass guitar, currently as a member of the B-52s, but originally as a member of new wave band The Waitresses. She has toured with many well-known acts besides the B-52s, including Cyndi Lauper, Sting, and Phyllis Hyman amongst many others. Suggested Song: I Know What Boys Like (Wikipedia)

If you are black an play in a band feel free to hit us up here or on our http://www.facebook.com/slashemuppunx page let us know.

Eventually I will be back to tag this post. Hot damn!

My band is on this list and i have never been so honored

Tumblr did some weird things for me when I originally tagged this post up, which also affected my resource page – a lot of bands that should be on the resource page were left out. I can’t seem to add the missing tags to the original post, so this post reflects the bands that got left out of the original tagging. I am super OCD about tagging because of how important I feel the resource page is to this blog, and I don’t ever want to a band to be left off of it.

Also @thelearnedfangirl, which band were you in?

Apollo Heights

Apollo Heights: White Music For Black People

There may be several notable Black rock bands most don’t know about, but the debut album from Apollo Heights, White Music For Black People
(released on the Minimal Vinyl label), beckons for your attention. (If
you are old enough, you might be familiar with rocker Screamin’ Jay
Hawkins’ Black Music For White People album, which featured the 1956 hit
“I Put A Spell On You.” The song was included in The Rock and Roll Hall
of Fame’s “500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll.”)

Danny Chavis
points out that EBONY in the 1960s was the first major publication to
introduce Jimi Hendrix to the world, in addition to introducing other
Black artists who pioneered the sound of rock. Though Hendrix’s
legendary imprint will never fade, Black rock bands still find it hard
to get a record deal, or even get noticed.

The real deal,
according to Honeychild: “They feel threatened that you’re doing ‘the
thing’ that contradicts their concept of what you ‘should be doing.’
People get really uptight about what their concept of ‘Black music’ is
… because our music is so different. Here, as Black people playing
alternative music, everyone’s like, ‘You can’t do that,’ and in Europe
it’s like, ‘Oh, wow, what are you gonna do?!’ It’s completely the other
side of the coin.”

None of those people making those comments have no idea where this genre of music came from if they’re so flabbergasted by this -___-

So true! Growing up, I was completely ignorant of where rock actually came from, and a lot of people made me feel like I had no place being into the music so much. It was an epiphany to discover that rock came out of blues and thus from the culture and experiences of African-Americans. We are really just reclaiming what’s ours, and our place has ALWAYS been here. The world just needs to be reminded of that, unfortunately.
